She became politically active with the civil rights organization People's Democracy while at Queen's University and became the youngest woman ever to be elected to the British parliament as a MP. As a Member of Parliament, she continued to take part in demonstrations.She was jailed in 1969 for 'riotous behavior' after a riot in Londonderry turned violent.
